Released in 2006 the coin was issued to celebrate 150 years since the Victoria Cross was instituted in 1856 and is part of a two coin set, along with The Medal design. With a mintage of 10,000,500 the coin is in relatively plentiful supply and is one of the most common 50p designs in circulation.
